Can Embedded SIM Be Transferred to New Phone?

 

Embedded SIM, also known as an eSIM, is a new way to load carrier data onto your smartphone or tablet without an external physical chip. It’s just half the size of a nano SIM and works on smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches alike.

As Apple gears up to release their eSIM-only iPhones, more devices are adopting this innovative technology. But how can you transfer your existing eSIM plan onto a new phone?

eSIM Carrier Activation

If you’re purchasing a new phone and wish to retain the same number, you may be wondering if it is possible to transfer your eSIM account from one device to the other. While transferring an eSIM isn’t as straightforward as simply taking out the physical SIM card, there are steps you can take in order to activate it on the new handset.

First, verify if your carrier supports eSIM Carrier Activation or eSIM Quick Transfer (see below). These options allow you to assign an eSIM to your new iPhone when purchasing it, or transfer a SIM from an old phone without contacting the carrier.

Apple has long been a proponent of eSIMs, which it now supports on every iPhone since the XS/XS Max. Furthermore, Wi-Fi/cellular iPads starting with the 5th generation model now support eSIMs as well.

eSIM Quick Transfer

Activating your eSIM account on a new phone is both effortless and convenient. It offers several advantages over physical SIM cards, such as increased security, no need for carrying or swapping cards, and access to an expansive global network that supports postpaid plans.

Apple has unlocked and enabled Bluetooth on a new iPhone running iOS 16 or later, enabling users to transfer an eSIM card between devices via Bluetooth. To take advantage of this feature, make sure your iPhone is unlocked with Bluetooth turned on and running iOS 16 or later.

Although eSIM Quick Transfer is an improvement over current methods, it should be noted that this option may not work on all devices or carriers. You must consult your carrier for instructions and support regarding this matter.

eSIM QR Code

If your phone is compatible with an eSIM card, your carrier should send you a QR Code. Scan it and your device will guide you through activation.

These SIMs contain all the information necessary for your carrier / mobile network provider (who pays for calls, texts and data) to identify you and grant access to their network. They also store security keys that ensure your connection remains protected).

But the new eSIM technology presents consumers and operators with several new challenges. The most pressing concern is transferring an eSIM account from one phone to another.

Furthermore, eSIM-capable devices enable secure remote eSIM activation of mobile subscriptions at any time and place. As a result, MNOs must devise creative solutions to accommodate growing consumer demands for eSIM activation on various devices and media types.

eSIM Activation via App

If you’re switching to an eSIM-only phone or need a new handset without having to transfer your cellular plan, activating the eSIM account on the new phone with an app is easy; however, please be patient as setup can take some time.

The initial step is to receive an email with a QR code, which can be scanned on your phone when connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi. After scanning it, you’ll be taken directly to an eSIM activation page (provided the QR code is valid).

Once activated, you can add a data plan and test out cellular service. If travelling abroad, an eSIM can also keep your device connected while offline.
